Symptoms of Hearing Loss

Because communication is inherent in many daily activities, a disruption to the auditory system can have effects in many varying aspects of life. As there are many degrees of deafness, people experience hearing loss differently. Depending on the individual, these are areas that may, or may not, be influenced by a loss of hearing.

  • Asking people to repeat themselves
  • Misunderstanding conversations, particularly with children

It is worth noting that speaking louder in a conversation will not necessary mean that the message is clearer. The difficulty with hearing loss is not sound volume, but sound clarity. Speaking louder often does not make your speech any less distorted. Instead try to pronounce each word clearly, as Australians have a tendency to run words into each other. Also ensure that the listener can see your lips as the shapes they make indicate the words you are saying.

  • Turning up the volume on the television

Some appliances do not have volume controls. This is particularly a dilemma with the telephone. Not only is volume a problem, but the listener is not able to see the speaker's mouth to follow their words. Fortunately many appliances are available with modifications to compensate for hearing loss.

The extra effort expended trying to compensate for all these factors can fatigue both individuals involved in the communication process.

  • Stress and Fatigue

This can lead to changed relationships and uncertainty.

  • Strained personal relationships
  • Social isolation

As with all the other symptoms mentioned these do not have to be a problem. Both can be solved by understanding and compensation on the part of the individuals involved. Help is always available.
